JulWinning verse Improving in Junior Cricket
Today’s topic is about Winning verse Improving in junior cricket.
My experience with coaches of junior teams and or players is that too many focus on the win / loss column. As coaches our focus should be on developing young cricketers skills and game awareness. If the coach main focus is winning you are only setting up the junior cricketer for disappointment!! If the coach creates a happy learning environment where the young developing cricketer can see improvement they are more likely to remain in the game and turn up to training each week.
Coaches of junior cricketers should be judged on whether players or teams learn and improve, not the result.
Players natural instincts will be to go out and win every Saturday morning. This is fine as long as they play the game in the right spirit.
In my opinion I believe coaches should focus on the processes (developing players skills and game awareness) and let the players focus on the outcomes (winning)
“Developing cricketers skills will ultimately give players / teams the best opportunity of winning long term”
Happy to hear any feedback / comments
