DecHydration for Junior Cricketers
Hi Cricketers.
With junior representative carnivals approaching I thought I would share some hydration tips.
Hydration plays an important role in cricket performance, especially at representative carnivals. Inadequate hydration can lead to a 15% reduction in performance. Poor hydration can result in
- Increased risk of cramps
- Dizziness
- Lack of concentration
- Reduced coordination and skill
- Poor decision making
- Less blood flow to working muscles
- Earlier feelings of fatigue
Monitoring hydration can be achieved by keeping an eye on urine colour. Aim for a pale, straw colour. If your urine is a dark yellow you need to increase fluid intake. Weighing yourself before and after play is another useful tool. If you lose 1kg during a days play aim to drink 1.5l of water
Water should be your primary choice of fluids. Sports drinks can be consumed during intense, hot or long sessions as a source of fuel (carbohydrate) and electrolytes (salt)
Tips
- Always turn up to training / matches well hydrated
- Consume 1 – 2 glasses of water before training or matches
- During training make the most of opportunities given by coaches to grab a drink
- On match day sip on fluids throughout the day
Optimise your performance by remaining hydrated and enjoy your cricket during the warmer summer months
